SWE GSL held a tour of the Utah State Capitol Renovation/Seismic Retrofit Project on March 21, 2015. It was a fascinating experience led by Jerod Johnson, SE of Reavely Engineers who served as the project manager for the seismic work. Also joining us for the tour was Emmylou Manwill, a guide with the Capitol Preservation Board, who filled us in on the historical details. Participants were able to view the lower level where the seismic base isolation mechanisms were installed to allow the building to sway up to 2′ in any direction during a seismic event. Other areas of the tour included the Visitor’s Center, the Rotunda, the Ceremonial Supreme Court Chamber and the House Chamber.
